We take pleasure in inviting you to participate in the Fifth International Conference on X-Ray Investigation of Polymer Structure. The series of conferences on X-Ray Investigations of Polymer Structure (XIPS) was started in Bielsko-Bia³a in 1987. The forthcoming one will be the fifth in this series. XIPS conference is a forum making possible a review of the present state of methods and achievements of X-ray structural investigations of polymers and polymer materials, as well as supporting discussions on the latest and future trends in this field.

This conference is part of a three-year project co-ordinated by the University of Zilina, Slovakia, which promotes research and its dissemination in current topics of computational mechanics (such as Trefftz-type formulations, non-linear analysis and error estimation).

A major objective is to provide opportunities for distinguished researchers to impart their knowledge and experience to those at the pre- or post-doctoral level. In addition to this, the conference in Szczyrk will encourage links between industry and academia by developing a forum in which, on the one hand, industrial designers are made aware of state-of-the-art research in computational methods and, on the other, young researchers are familiarized with the demands of industry and practical applications of their research. This co-operation in research and development is particularly fruitful in Bielsko-Biala, where the organizing institution and the local automobile industry have numerous links.
